Working in the dynamic environment at one of America’s craft brewing pioneers lends itself to having a unique cast of characters – new and old alike – who call Anchor home. The brewers may be the “magicians,” but there’s an entire team here at Anchor who are dedicated to upholding our high standards of craft brewing. In our series of “Anchor Profiles,” we sit down with one of the interesting folks from the Anchor team, hand them an Anchor brew to loosen the lips, and ask them a few questions to help you get to know the people behind the hand-made beer.
I grew up in Sonoma, I went to UCSB for undergrad, played rugby for nine years, got a masters to became a librarian, then decided to switch to BEER and have never looked back.
What do you love to do in the Bay Area ?
I love the SF music scene. I go to a lot of concerts, including festivals like Bottlerock Napa, where I saw Weezer and Outkast in the same day last year, and Outside Lands. Other recent favorites include Paul McCartney, Zac Brown Band, Andrew Bird, among many others.
How did you first become interested in craft beer?
Well, my dad was a brewer here from the late 80’s until the early 2000s, so I guess I’m kind of spoiled because it kind of seems like craft beer has always been a part of my life. But until a few years ago that meant only Anchor for me. Now I always like to try something I’ve never had before. There’s so much good beer out there – it’s really fun to see what other breweries are trying.
I started working here in February of 2013. I work in Compliance – basically keeping us out of trouble in all 50 states (product registrations and licensing mostly).
Do you have a favorite brewing or beer-related memory – at Anchor or elsewhere?
Not sure how many of those memories are PG enough for our website, but my favorite memories here so far have been making friends with co-workers in the taproom over our beers. We have an amazing group of people that work here and being in the taproom, sharing some beers, allows us to make friends with people in different departments that you may never get to talk to otherwise.
What do you love most about working in the beer industry?
The sense of community. Anytime we go into other local breweries and they find out you work in the industry you are almost always treated to some free beers and often get to try something new and/or special. I love that we can all congratulate each other on great new beers, help each other out, and learn from each other.
What is your favorite Anchor beer ?
Ugh! As they say in the tap room, it’s like picking your favorite child! I would have to say Liberty Ale. I love the history of the beer and what it has done for craft brewing… not to mention the great hoppy flavor.
