We all know IPAs are numerous and plentiful in the brewery world. In this sea of the most manipulated varietal in craft beer, our latest IPA emerges: “Blah Blah Blah IPA”. We love IPAs, but with all the variant styles (Double, Triple, Black, Cascadian, Session, Belgian, Wet Hop and West Coast), we thought that Blah Blah Blah was a suitable name. Look at it as poking fun at the sheer volume of sub-styles of IPAs.
But our version can stand alone. An India Red Ale, which is a bit darker than our Brew Free! or Die IPA, has a rich, dark character accompanied by all of the noteworthy elements associated with hop’s bitterness, flavor and aroma.
As it so happens, Blah Blah Blah started out as a five gallon homebrew in my backyard. Many, many batches later the IPA found its way into our San Francisco 2nd Street pub brewery. Ultimately it even made it to Third Street Brewery, our partner brewery in Cold Spring, Minnesota as part of our “Big Can – Draft-only series.”
After becoming interested in the India Red Ale style, I saw the opportunity to play around with one of my favorite malts, “Baird Crystal 70.” Baird Crystal 70 was the primary malt used during my time at Triple Rock Brewery in Berkeley, in their American red ale, Red Rock. The nutty and sweet character of this particular malt gives Blah Blah Blah a red hue and the addition of biscuit and dark Munich malts grant the brew a delicate toastiness. The bitterness is assertive, but balanced by a subtle sweetness—all part of the plan of course. Late in the boil we threw in a few aroma hops such as Centennial, Ahtanum, Amarillo and Mosaic which combined give the beer a more “hop-quenching” flavor than our current IPA lineup. Finally, we loaded the fermenter with aggressive, dry hoping, using Citra, Chinook, Simcoe, Mosaic and a newer varietal Equinox. The result—a big hop aroma on top of a malty sweetness.
The name is fun and playful and we really like the idea of someone heading to their favorite good beer bar and asking for a Blah Blah Blah IPA. So go for it and tell us what you think!
Thanks for your support,
Shaun and Nico
